AMBUEHL SCHOOL PROFILE

Built in 1977, Harold J. Ambuehl Elementary School is situated in a rustic location on the bank of San Juan Creek, surrounded by open fields and equestrian riding stables. Historic landmarks throughout the community, such as Mission San Juan Capistrano and the Los Rios Historic District, provide reminders of Early California.

Although Ambuehl prides itself on its historic atmosphere, the school was completely renovated in 2019 and 2022.  The renovation brought completely new playground equipment, fencing around the perimeter of the school, new restroom facilities and interiors of all classrooms. We also received state of the art alarm and bells, mounted projectors and sound systems in every class.

Ambuehl is committed to preparing productive young citizens in the 21st century. Named a California Distinguished School, there is dedicated staff at each grade level that provides each student with learning experiences that are standards based, engaging, and relevant to their everyday lives. Ambuehl’s educational program is a balance of foundational skills, general instruction and engaging enrichment in all fundamental subjects based on the California State Standards.

Soaring Eagle Radio allows K - 5 students to “broadcast” over the school's PA system from the principal’s office every morning. Each broadcast begins with a welcome from the principal, followed by a student leading the entire school in the Pledge of Allegiance, and announcements or encouragement for the day.  This year, Ambuehl is piloting a Mindfulness program to support our staff and student's well being.

To prepare for a rapidly changing world, students are provided with a district supplied 1:1 chromebook to engage in learning. Personal growth is nurtured in each child during the school year. Student recognition takes place through monthly Character Counts Awards and Soaring Eagle Academic Awards for Middle of the Year growth on DIBELS and End of the Year growth on i-Ready Math.

Ambuehl has a strong and active community.  We have many energetic parents who assist staff members and students throughout the school year in the classroom, in the library, at recess, and even from home. We are proud of the amazing work that our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) provides for our school. Their ongoing support has funded various programs such as Meet the Masters art program, Red Ribbon Week, All Abilities Week, and assemblies such as Imagination Machine for writing and Coach Baseball for sportsmanship.

Students, parents, and staff members enjoy being “Ambuehl Eagles.”  We are a small school with a big heart!

Have a Soaring Eagle Day!

Ambuehl Elementary School was named after Harold Ambuehl, who is remembered for his 30 years of service to the children in southern Orange County as a teacher, principal, and superintendent.  In the early 1940’s, Mr. Ambuehl started his teaching and administrative career in California at San Juan School in San Juan Capistrano.  He eventually became a principal and then the superintendent of the San Juan School District up until the time that it merged with the newly formed Capistrano Unified School District.  Mr. Ambuehl retired in 1972.
